Our Most Anticipated Upcoming Game Releases

Last year brought a lot of new and amazing games to players everywhere. From highly-anticipated, big-budget games like Fallout 4, to one-man dev team releases like Undertale, 2015 was a great year for many gamers, and we’re hoping 2016 and onward will be even better! We asked our team members about the games they are waiting in anticipation to be released, and here are their responses.

Ahmar Rana, Game Designer

What video game release are you anticipating the most?
Tyto Ecology for Steam! But in terms of stuff I’m not working on…The Legend of Zelda for Wii U (though I wouldn’t be surprised if we got a NX version.)

How did you first hear about the game?
At the reveal during Nintendo’s E3 2014 conference.

When is its planned release date?
Just “2016”. If I had to guess, I think it’s a fair assumption that it will be Nintendo’s big title for the holidays alongside their new console.

What sets this upcoming title apart from others of its type?
There’s a rightful cry for big publishers to branch out of their established IP, but I’ve never had this issue with Nintendo and Zelda before. Each one feels so different from the last that the series has never gotten stale for me, despite all the years since I first played A Link to the Past on Super Nintendo.

Which aspects of the game are you most excited about?
Every Zelda has been “open world” to an extent, but this is the first where they’re actively promising a large, sandbox environment. I’m eager to see how Nintendo handles the open world concept without falling into the usual trappings of busy work and padding that are so common to the genre.

Kevin Wise, Video Producer

What video game release are you anticipating the most?
Persona 5 on PS4.

How did you first hear about the game?
I’ve been a fan of the series for a while now.

When is its planned release date?
Fall 2016.

What sets this upcoming title apart from others of its type?
Absorbing characters, superb writing, and an overall fun style.

Which aspects of the game are you most excited about?
I’m just excited to play the next installment in the Persona series; those Atlus guys sure know how to make a video game.

Jeremy Baker, Web Developer

What video game release are you anticipating the most?
Dark Souls III.

How did you first hear about the game?
Ad on Facebook.

What sets this upcoming title apart from others of its type?
The first Dark Souls is one of my favorite games and none of the sequels/prequels (Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls II, Bloodbourne) were able to duplicate many of the great game design decisions that were made in it. Dark Souls III. Looks like it’s sticking more to the design of the first one, so I’m super excited about it!

Which aspects of the game are you most excited about?
Playing it with friends. I’m not entirely sure how it will work, but it sounds like there’s going to be extended multiplayer options.

Nick Galjanic, Technical Game Design Intern

What video game release are you anticipating the most?
No Man’s Sky for PC.

How did you first hear about the game?
IGN.

When is its planned release date?
TBA.

What sets this upcoming title apart from others of its type?
By the trailers, it seems that it puts more effort into the tone of space travel and whatnot than other titles like it. The promise of virtually infinite planets to explore sounds awesome, too. I mean, I am a little bit skeptical, but if they pull it off, it could easily be one of my favorite games ever. Space is the coolest thing ever!

Which aspects of the game are you most excited about?
Exploring planets and finding things that I can get immersed in and really feel like they are larger than myself. I suppose that’s something I’m always looking for in a game: the ability to interact with something that is several orders of magnitude larger than myself, because it helps stretch the limits of my imagination.

Kelly Yeo, Concept Artist

What video game release are you anticipating the most?
Dishonored 2, on PC.

How did you first hear about the game?
I became a really big fan of Dishonored in 2014, which makes me pretty late to the party. There had been no news of a sequel (save for a couple of false alarms and rumours) until E3 in 2015, and while many people were more hyped for Bethesda’s Fallout 4 news, I was over the moon when the news dropped about Dishonored 2.

When is its planned release date?
No specifics, just 2016.

What sets this upcoming title apart from others of its type?
I really enjoy stealth games, so much so that I actually wrote a paper on the evolution of stealth games while I was in college – and you’d be surprised at how few games actually bill it as their main mechanic because it’s apparently not a popular playstyle (many people I’ve tried to introduce to Dishonored have just wound up killing everything and getting the “bad” ending). So it’s nice to have more of those in general. I also like games where your playstyle affects the plot. Pair these with incredibly rich world-building, compelling and interesting characters, and gorgeous aesthetics, and I think it speaks for itself. It’s also relatively new Bethesda IP, which is pretty rare for the company.

Which aspects of the game are you most excited about?
I’m really looking forward to having the choice of playing 2 different protagonists, which will definitely affect the narrative. And one of them is the protagonist’s daughter from the first game, which I’m super stoked about! Plus we get to visit different parts of the same world that I fell in love with in the first one.

From the games that we’ve seen trailers for, to those that have only been rumors, 2016 looks like a promising year for new and groundbreaking titles. We want to hear from you, as well: let us know which game releases you are looking forward to!
